About The Journey Program
The Journey Program, based in Traverse City and Frankfort, Michigan offers exercise programs in a gym setting for cancer patients. The goal of The Journey Program is to improve the participants’ quality of life through exercise and nutrition. Participants are supported during treatment and recovery helping them transition back into their lives after cancer. This program is run by a patient and friendly staff:
Jean Mahoney, MS, CPT-ACE, CES
Jean has a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology and a Master’s degree in Health Science Administration from Michigan State University. Jean is a breast cancer survivor and a graduate of a similar program previously in Traverse City: The Cancer Exercise Wellness Program. Jean experienced first-hand the benefit of exercise in recovering from cancer and treatment. Jean assisted Annemarie then became a Certified Personal Trainer through the American College on Exercise (ACE). Jean is an ACE certified Personal Trainer as well as a Cancer Exercise Specialist certified through the Cancer Exercise Training Institute. She trains clients at all levels including strength training for seniors and those recovering from cancer treatments. Jean continues to be committed to helping others exercise to improve their quality of life.
Annemarie Wigton BS, CPT-NSCA, CMT
Annemarie Wigton graduated from CMU in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in Health Fitness in Preventive and Rehabilitative Studies. During college she was certified as a massage therapist from which she practiced for 7 years. Annemarie is a NSCA certified personal trainer and certified in injury prevention of female athletes through Cincinnati Sportsmetrics™. In addition to training, Annemarie previously worked as a physical therapy aid. She is a certified CETI Cancer Exercise Specialist™ and has trained hundreds of cancer patients since 2007. Annemarie co-founded The Journey Program™ in 2009 which offers physical fitness training to cancer patients during all stages of their treatment and recovery. The Journey Program™ currently has two locations in Traverse City and one in Frankfort. Her hope is that exercise becomes a standard part of care for cancer patients and survivors.
Annemarie loves spending time with her husband and three kids. She is a proud Traverse City local and enjoys all of the seasonal activities, restaurants, and sights that the area has to offer.
