Moderate Exercise During Chemotherapy Study

I'm always so happy to read about another study showing us that the Journey Program can make a difference! Moderate exercise during cancer treatment helps in so many ways. From clearer thinking to feeling better emotionally and physically.

From Oncology Nursing:
"Early-stage cancer patients who are physically active throughout chemotherapy have a reduced risk of experiencing cognitive impairment known as “chemobrain,” and are less likely to have chronic inflammation, according to a University of Rochester (UR) Medical Center study presented June 1 at the 2015 ASCO Annual Meeting"

Personal Goals

There have been some great accomplishments from the participants of The Journey Program! Some of these are large, lifetime goals and others are small victories that mean a lot on the road to recovery.

  • First 5k completed, lifetime goal.
  • Return to horseback riding after brain cancer.
  • First time ever playing volleyball- and after breast cancer and treatment too.
  • Finally having energy to complete a load of laundry and put it away without having to rest.
  • Doctor recommends reducing medications or stopping them completely.
  • Sleeping through the night.

Each person that comes through The Journey Program is at a different point in their lives. Their health before diagnosis is different. Their cancers and effects of the treatments are different. We meet each individual where they are at and help them excel.

Hope is our Goal

Giving those with a cancer diagnoses a hopeful feeling is part of the Journey Program’s(TM)
goals. I always enjoy watching the progression of our clients throughout the course of the class.
The first day of class everyone is quiet and a little nervous, not sure what to expect. As the
weeks go on they form bonds with others in the class. They perk up a little each week. I so often
see clients talking together about their treatments, their families, their jobs. I see smiles and
hear laughter. I see hugs and tears. I see people helping people along their journey. That is the
feeling we strive to create with the Journey Program(TM).

Cost Will Not be a Roadblock

Finances are a big issue for most people going through cancer treatment. It is for this reason and through the generosity of our sponsors that The Journey Program is a FREE program. We understand that many people suffering through treatment are unable to work. We know that these individuals do not need one more bill, one more expense adding extra stress to life. Exercise has been shown beneficial to recovery and preventing cancer recurrence. The Journey Program and its sponsors do not want cost to be a roadblock to recovery but have made exercise accessible to everyone, regardless of income!

My Unexpected Journey

Almost everyone has been touched by cancer, including me. I am a breast cancer survivor. I
remember the day that I found a lump. In no time at all I was flung onto a path I never expected
to take. My primary care doctor gave me a hug and got the mammogram scheduled; the
radiologist told me to call my husband and sent me to a surgeon and the surgeon scheduled
surgery and sent me to the oncologist. And there I was, on a journey I never thought I would
take. I spent a lot of time on the couch, tired beyond imagination; recovering from surgeries,
procedures, chemo and radiation. Later on I started to spend some time in the gym and began
to feel better. I know that exercise helped me through my treatments, decreasing the joint pain
and fatigue. It made me feel hopeful, and happy that I was able to do something to help myself
and that’s enough to change everything.

The Journey

Everyone who has heard those words remembers the day that they got their diagnoses, the day
the journey began. It’s a Journey that none of us ever expects to take. Its a Journey that none of us wants to make. And yet here we are, on this path. The Journey Program(TM) is here to help
make that journey a little easier by giving you some tools that can help. We know from scientific
studies that moderate exercise can slow down the growth of some cancers and helps people
tolerate the side effects of chemotherapy.

Here to Help

We are so excited to present our new website! We hope that it will make finding information about The Journey Program easier. Please share our website and Like us on Facebook.

It is unfortunate that right now an estimated 50% of men and ⅓ of all women will develop some type of cancer in their lives (American Cancer Society 2014 Facts and Figures). Cancers of every kind and their treatments affect individuals differently. We are astounded that when we meet new participants for our program they look normal and we cannot tell outwardly that they are suffering. They look like your average neighbor, sister, father, or friend. We have had participants in our program ranging in age from 27-96 years old.

For this reason we ask you to help us reach out, help us spread the word about The Journey Program. You never know who in your life will see the message or those that need it most right now. We are here to help.
